Project 24 Case Study – One Year Update For Two Niche Websites

Youtube video transcript

So what would be better than one birthday pie? Two birthday pies today we’re celebrating the 12-month anniversary of two of my sites. And I’m gonna share all the stats and data with you. So don’t go anywhere. Hello, YouTube and a very special hello to all my subscribers, my name’s Phil. And welcome to my channel, where I document my journey, building an online income.

And it’s been going on for more than 12 months. We’re talking about my two sites that have just reached the ripe old age of 12 months. And we are gonna talk about all the numbers. I wanna share all my Google analytics with you. My Google search. We’re gonna be talking about impressions, clicks, page views.

We’re gonna be talking about how much money I’ve made from these sites. And I really want you to take this information and apply it to your own journey. If you know what it looks like when compared to other people’s websites. You’re gonna know if you are on track and it’s gonna give you a lot more confidence in your own journey.

That’s what this channel’s all about. If you want to follow me, why not subscribe and also just watch along a little bit. And if you think I deserve it, why not? Give me an okay, let’s get into it. Okay. So before we actually get started and look at all the data, let’s just talk about how old these sites are.

I started site two on the 24th of October, 2019, and I started site three on the 29th. So they’re now both over a year old, but they’ve grown in very different ways. So that’s what we’re gonna look at today. We’re gonna check out all the Google analytics I’m gonna give you. Big picture. I’m gonna give you lots of details.

I’m also going to give you Google search console data, looking at clicks impressions. So you can gauge this for your own site. I’m also gonna give you some access to how much money I’ve made from these sites. And lots more. So make sure you stick around for all of that. First of all, let’s see the big picture.

Let’s look at Google analytics. Okay. So site two in the wedding niche, not the best. I’ve got a tool. And over the last 12 months, it’s made a total of 10,228 page views of which 9,411 were organic. It started off, it seemed to grow and as you can see It’s dropping off. I haven’t really touched this site in months and of course it is dropping off, but it still has some pretty good stats you can see.

The time on page is quite high, sort of five minutes for organic views. It does have a high bounce rate, but that could be because some of the articles just aren’t up to scratch or perhaps it’s because I answer the questions that people are looking for and they don’t need to carry on and they just leave them.

This is what happens if we compare this to site three, which is only five days younger in the same time period, it’s got 94,028. Page views in total of which 86,437 are organic. It has a similar time on page and the bounce rate is about 5% lower, but still in the nineties. But again, because of the type of niche websites that we’re building, following the Project 24 method, having a high bounce rate isn’t necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

So if we look at how many articles actually went up on these. First of all, turning to site two, it’s got a total of 34 articles and you can see a breakdown of the articles based on response staple and pillar, but the numbers are, there are 20 response posts. There are only nine staple posts and only five pillar posts.

This is really a site I used to train up writers and I didn’t give it the normal sort of split off. The 10, 10, 10 as Income School teaches. And you can see the percentages there as well, depending how you like to digest your numbers. So if we look at site three, it has many more posts on it.

It’s got 74. In total, ready to go. 29 of those are response posts, 24 staple posts and 13 are pillar posts. And there’s actually eight posts on the site that are in draft form that I haven’t actually put up yet. I haven’t published, but they have been paid for all. They have been written. So I included that on how many sites I’ve got on the site at the.

If you are creating content, you probably realize that it takes a lot of effort. It takes a lot of time to do things, so let’s just talk about these two sites. How much time it takes. And how much money I paid because I outsourced everything on these two sites. I didn’t actually write anything myself apart from editing, which actually did take a long while because I was training up writers as I went.

In terms of writing hours I calculated based on Project 24 how long. Suggest you should spend on a response post, stable post and a P post. So site two probably took about 200, six hours to write all that content. And site three, 306 hours. And in terms of how much money I invested into these sites for site two, about $1,340, and for site three around 3,273.

And I was paying a little bit less than perhaps you might pay. Elsewhere because I actually hired local writers, local expats here in Taiwan, and I paid them teacher wages near enough. What a teacher would earn for one hour of work was one hour of writing about a thousand words. So if we quickly look at Google search consult for these two sites for the entire year, just give you an idea.

If you’re looking at your own site and seeing its progress. So for the entire year sites,  two got about 9,000, 190 clicks and 88,000 impressions. You can see the click through rate there is about 10% and the average position around 20. And it grew. And it’s dropping off a little bit now because I haven’t done anything to maintain it.

If you compare that to site three which got 75,700. Clicks in a year and it’s got one point 99 million impressions. That’s quite crazy. But it’s only got a click through rate about three 0.8% and the average position a little bit higher at 16, 17. Obviously this one has grown a lot more in the same amount of.

But it’s had a lot more content go onto it. So just to compare those two results with my site, one, which is about 16 months old, it’s not doing as well as site three, but it’s doing a lot better than site two. And in about 12 months into that site, it had got 12,400 clicks and 291,000 impressions. And that had a click through rate of 4.3.

Average position of 23. So you can see three different sites over the same amount of time. And this one would’ve had about 60 posts on it. I think about 12 months in very different results in very different niches. Okay. So before I go on and talk about milestones, when I hit certain sorts of page views as targets, let’s talk about the last sort of 30 days on these two sites.

Okay. So looking at sites two in the last. 30 ish days last month, September the 24th to October the 24th, 2020. This site has got 1,659 views overall, of which a hundred 1,515 are organic. And you can see the time on page five minutes. It’s getting a 94% bounce rate and this is how that site’s doing still.

High 90%, 91% organic traffic, but it’s really reliant on a couple of articles for all that traffic, which I’ll show you in just a moment in comparison for the last month. So this would be from the 29th of September to. The 29th of October site three got 23,999. Overall page views of which 22,523 were actually organic.

And again, at the time on pages, nearly six minutes and it’s getting about a 90% was getting a 90% bounce.  so two very different sites for the same age, as you can see, but how does that break down? So if we look at the. Top five articles for each site, how much traffic is actually being brought in by those top five.

So looking at site two, you can see the first article brings in about 638 page views and article 2, 477. So they’re quite high. And in terms of percentage that’s about 38 and half percent and 28%. And you can see that when it comes to other articles, they’re only bringing in about 10% of the traffic for site two.

This is not a very good thing, because if I lose ranking on the first two or three posts there. There’s gonna be no traffic at all. Really? If we compare that to site three, so site three, you can see that the first three articles are pretty much the same somewhere between 2,300 page views in the last sort of 30 days and 2000 and article four and five a little bit.

Over 14,000 page views are coming from the other articles on the site. So this is really good because if we calculate it first, the top five articles are bringing in about 40% of the traffic, which is not too bad. I don’t think so. Very different websites. When you look at them at the percentages and the numbers like this.

Okay. So why don’t we go even deeper into the data and actually look a little bit at some milestones. If you watch my previous video, I was measuring the ghost town phase by certain milestones. And what I want to do is to cover them again, but give you some extra data so you can compare it to your own data.

And hopefully it’s gonna make you feel a lot better, cuz you are doing much better than I am. This is really what I want to do on this channel to give you the motivation, knowing that you are out doing someone. Okay. The milestones we’re gonna look at are a hundred. Organic page views to 500 to a thousand to 5,000 to 10,000, how long it took to reach that stage.

I’m not only gonna tell you how long it took to get there. I’m gonna say how many articles I had published at the time of each of those milestones, but also talk about clicks and impressions that I got through Google search. So there’s gonna be a lot of data coming at you right now. So stick around and pick out the most important things that you can apply to your own websites.

Okay. So what you can see now is a little bar chart for actually my three sites, just to give you a comparison. You can see that in blue, we’re looking at a hundred organic page views. The red is 500. The yellow is a thousand, the green is 5,000 and the orange is 10,000. Now site two, doesn’t have 5,000 and 10,000, cuz it hasn’t reached that milestone yet.

But you can see if we compare the a hundred page views. It was 80 days for site 180 4 days for site three. So that seems quite common, whereas it took a lot longer for the wedding niche site two there. And if we compare the 10,000. It took site 1, 340 days to get to that point, but only 215 days for site three.

So you can see the numbers there and compare it to your own and see if you are on track to do much better than I am right now. Now, just for my own case, if we look at how many articles I actually had posted on the. When I hit those milestones again, you’ve got the same milestones of a hundred to 10,000 organic page views.

And you can see, for example, to hit a thousand page views, I actually had 61 articles on the website at that time. Now I’m not saying you had to have 61 articles to hit a thousand organic page views. It’s just, that’s how far I was in my journey. And up until that point, I was publishing on a fairly regular basis.

But the interesting thing about site two and site three, in particular site three, is that I started hitting those milestones much more quickly, I think, because it was very regular. It did actually slow down with the publishing on site three between a thousand views and 10,000 views. I only actually published an additional article.

So perhaps if I had published more, I could have grown quicker basically. . But if we look at this in terms of Google search console, cuz I, I know a lot of you like to look at those numbers as well. I wanna give you the clicks and the impressions for when I hit those numbers as well. So you can see here that for a hundred page views through to 10,000 page views, You’ve got site one, site two and site three as well.

And it’s how many clicks I got when I was getting that amount of page views. So you can see, for example, a hundred. Page views. I only got 27 clicks through Google search consult for site one, compared to 10,000 where I got apparently 6,070. And you can see the numbers don’t really match up.

That is probably because I did some pretty good interlinking and people go to the site and they’re seeing more than one. Per visit. So that’s what I put that down to. There isn’t too much direct traffic and there’s not too much referral traffic coming to the sites. It’s mainly organic traffic people searching.

So you can see that. And if you’re interested in impressions, you can see this, the information on screen now. So again, it’s the milestones a hundred page views to 10,000 and you can see for example let’s say 5,000 page views on site one. I got 88,100 impressions. So when I was getting 10,000 page views on site three, I was getting just short of 200,000 impressions that I’m also gonna put up on screen.

So you can see just the actual screenshots from the different Google search console here. So you can see 100 page views for this site. Five, so I’ll just put these on screen so you can have a look for them. So it goes from a hundred page views to 500 page views to a thousand organic page views, 5,000 and 10,000. So you can just see where I got the numbers for from, for. Now the interesting thing is about how that compares to what Project 24 actually predicts because I’ve been following their program and it’s all to do with what they’ve been teaching me.

And just in terms of traffic and things like that. So we’re looking at 12 months in and according to the new update, they have project 3.0. If you are getting to about 12 months in and following everything they would expect you to have about 6,000 page views. So certainly for site two, I was well under that for site three.

I’m well over it, almost double if not triple that number and for site two, it was a little bit over it too. In terms of content, they recommend it. By this time, you probably should have about 111 articles on your actual site. So obviously site two and three. I didn’t quite make that. And also site one.

I didn’t have that amount of content. And in terms of money let’s talk about money. How much money have I made from these sites? So this is the moment in the video. When you are gonna feel pretty good about yourself, or most of you will. Now I haven’t really monetized these sites at all. I’ve really worried more about getting traffic and for site two, I haven’t worried about it much at all.

So site two is only monetized with Amazon really, and it’s made a grand total of 60 cents. So in a year that site’s made only 60 cents, you live and learn really . What about site three? Is it any better? Not really, no. So again, it’s not very well monetized. I haven’t quite figured out an affiliate program or anything like that.

I’m thinking about doing an info product, but just with everything else I’m trying to do at the moment, it’s just not top of the list. And I haven’t got round to doing the research and writing it, but it did make a little bit of money from. So it’s made a total of $12 and 6 cents in the last year.

Pretty good for a service niche that has no really real connection to Amazon at all. There’s nothing much you can buy off of Amazon that actually is connected to this. . Yeah, nevermind. So I know that some of you’re screaming at me right now. Why would you put all that effort into making sites and you don’t get any money out of it?

The thing is until you start getting substantial traffic, Jim and Ricky from Income School actually say, don’t worry too much about monetization. What they say to me is that monetization is something you can quickly turn on, but traffic takes a long time to generate. So I had a bit of an issue with Zoic ads on my first website and decided to take them off.

And I didn’t really want to risk site three’s progress in some way, something I was doing slowing the site down or something. So I left them off, but it’s actually something that I’m gonna do. Implement pretty soon. So I’m gonna watch a video by a Project 24 member called Josh. He’s really good, really technical.

And he says he has a really good way to set up Zoic so you can have a fast website, but also increase your revenue again. It’s just on the list. I’ve got a lot of things on my plate right now, and I need to find the time to really dedicate a whole day to it and not just do it. As I’m doing other things.

So that’s why I’m not really making a lot of money. I’m not really that worried because I have the traffic and as long as I can keep that going, I’m pretty sure that when I have time next year, I’m gonna be able to monetize this fairly quickly. So the other thing is these sites aren’t really making money.

Firstly site two. My search analysis was really bad on this site because I rushed it. If you’ve seen my video, where I talk about hiring writers from Facebook, I am actually kind. Got a little bit drunk, put an ad on Facebook for local people and wasn’t expecting anyone to bite. And then they did. And I had to quickly come up with some titles for them to actually write.

And I rushed it. I didn’t really understand the competition. And if I went back now, I probably would do a better job, but it’s not really something I’m interested in. It’s in the wedding niche. At that time, my wife and I were gonna have a big family wedding here in Taiwan. And a week before that happened the whole COVID 19 kicked off and Taiwan closed their borders and the whole kind of niche got a bit sour for me.

I didn’t really want to write about it or think about it to be honest, but it’s not something I’m gonna let die. I will get background on it. So this year’s been a bit difficult for me because I’ve taken on a massive role in. Local running club where I’m organizing everything. Although it only happens on Sundays.

It’s overtaking my whole week. I’m always getting messages. I’m always having to think about things. And it’s a massive distraction, but that ends in December. We’re also planning to move back in with my mother-in-law cuz we’re saving up to buy an apartment hopefully at the end of 2021.

But that’s also good because it means that I don’t have to pay the rent cuz I pay rent on the current apartment. So I’m gonna be dedicating a lot more time on these sites in the coming months and years. So yeah. So you can stop screaming at me for not making any money. It’s gonna happen.  so guys, hopefully you’ve enjoyed this video and if you have why not give me a and if you liked it really.

A lot. Why not subscribe? Just remember if you put the work in, you will see the results and remember success is coming.
